Education and schools
How did Derby’s children come to be taught? For most of the century the answer depended on which church your parents attended. Anglican “National” schools and Nonconformist “British” schools competed for pupils, St Mary’s ran its own Catholic school on Edward Street, and in 1851 the Diocesan training college opened on Uttoxeter Road to train schoolmistresses.
After the 1870 Education Act, board schools began filling the gaps with the big board schools that many Derby people still remember attending. Jon, a former head teacher, tells the story from both sides of the desk.
