Jon Grattidge has been telling people about Derby’s past for most of his life. He studied local history at university and went on to a career in primary education, retiring as a head teacher.

His family have lived in Derby since at least 1635, and his own ancestors turn up in several of his talks: in the courts of the West End, in the chapels, and in the records of the parish.

He now spends much of his time in the Local Studies Library, on the streets of the old town, and giving talks to local groups and societies. His particular interest is the nineteenth century, when Derby grew from a market town into a railway and manufacturing city, and the West End, where much of that story happened.

What people say

Jon has extensive knowledge and enthusiasm about Derby’s local history. I learn something new every time I listen to him.Review on Jon’s Facebook page
Jon kindly accompanied the Cosy Bike & Hike walking party through and out of Derby, as the hike followed the Bonnie Prince Charlie Walk from the city centre to Ashbourne. He told the history of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the highwaymen of Derby, and led with enthusiasm and so many fascinating facts. Jon brought the walk to life, popping up along the way in fields and at landmarks, and was a real highlight for many.Review from the organisers of the Cosy Bike & Hike 2025 and 2026
