The impact of the early railway
In the space of a year, three separate railway companies arrived at a field on the edge of Derby and agreed to share a single station. They shared Francis Thompson’s long, elegant Trijunct Station. Four years later the three companies merged to form the Midland Railway, and Derby became its headquarters.
This talk follows what happened next: the works, the Railway Village built for the workers, the Midland Hotel, the thousands of people who came to fill them, and the way the railway shifted the whole centre of gravity of the town.
