Chapels and churches in Derby’s West End
Within a short walk of Cathedral Green stand five churches built across four centuries: the Cathedral itself, St John’s, St Anne’s, St Alkmund’s and Pugin’s St Mary’s. Around them stood a number of Nonconformist chapels, most of them now gone.
This talk explains who built each of them, why there, and how they got on with one another, including the Victorian spire built, it was said, purely to spoil the view of the Catholic church opposite. It is the talk that grew into the West End Churches Heritage Walk, and it makes a good introduction to it.
