Bonnie Prince Charlie and the highwaymen of Derby
On 4 December 1745 Charles Edward Stuart, Bonnie Prince Charlie, rode into Derby at the head of the Jacobite army. It was as far south as they would get. Two days later, after a tense council of war at Exeter House on Full Street, the army turned back for Scotland.
This talk tells the story of those few days: who came, where they stayed, how the town reacted, and why Derby still remembers them, from the statue on Cathedral Green to the walking route that follows their road from Ashbourne. Along the way it meets the highwaymen of Georgian Derby, whose stories are almost as colourful as the prince’s.
